The Great Hall

This hall was once divided into several rooms, the largest of which was probably used for entertaining. Appearances were crucial in the Middle Ages and the highest echelons of society took every available opportunity to impress.

Grand feasts would have been held here. A preserved wedding invitation received by the military commander in Varberg, Hindrik Krummedige, in 1519 bears witness to this. The wedding feast, which lasted for four days, was held to celebrate the double wedding of Ulfstand’s daughters. We can be sure that it was an impressive affair, with an overabundance of food, drink, music and entertainment, all framed by high-status artefacts in gold, silver, Venetian glass and majolica.
