Craftsmen working with a vault in a brick construction.

Theme: medieval construction & building maintenance

This year marks 50 years since the European Year of Building Conservation was proclaimed by the Council of Europe! It was a reaction to the extensive demolition waves of the 1960s and 70s.

During the anniversary year, the role of the cultural environment today and in the future will be highlighted – for the climate, for the environment and for our built cultural heritage to survive and enrich society.

We of course want to be part of drawing attention to this at Glimmingehus, and that is why we are dedicating not just one row of theme days to building conservation, but two!

In this first session, master bricklayer Henrik Nilsson from HN Byggnadsvård will be there, showing how vaults were built in the Middle Ages.

In addition, roofer Ola Lejonklo from Nårligt Byggnadshantverk will be on site to demonstrate traditional thatching, with both reeds and straw.

Take the opportunity to ask the craftsmen your questions!

There will also be other activities related to medieval construction and building conservation, where you can, for example, try your hand at clay brick making, painting, architectural assignments from the castle’s master builder, rope making and lots of other things!

Psst! There will be more building conservation and medieval construction on July 30-31!
